Being vegetarian : A healthy lifestyle

So this is not a typically conevential post for all you SWF followers. As it quite obviously states, my blog is pretty much about fashion. What I wear, trends I like, and occassionally things I've been up to. I really want to start making it more about me as a whole, and how I live my life. One of the biggest things is probably my healthy lifestyle.

Now please do not get me wrong, I am not the kind of girl that goes to the gym everyday, drinks protein shakes and has abs the size of my fist. I still eat the occasional (sometimes a little TOO occasional) junk food and cheese and carbs will always be my achilles heel. But on a whole, I decided to start leading a healthier lifestyle, which started with me turning into a vegetarian.

Now, I'm not going into weightloss, as it's a personal thing and I don't really want to act like I know about weightloss when I don't, as everyone is so so different. But I will say this :
1. I have quite obviously lost weight from the beginning of my blog until now as I was 16 when I started this blog. 16. I am now 19, grown up and dropped puppy fat like quite alot of people my age.
2. I live a healthy lifestyle & I do put the work in. I don't live by a set amount of calories and I see food as a friend, not an enemy. Having a good relationship with food is the most important thing in any kind of weightloss or healthy living.
3. Turning vegetarian alone won't make you lose weight. It's not a quick fix for everyone and if you are a meat lover then please don't deprive yourself just because you think it will make you lose weight! It definitely contributed for me as I was able to eat healthier options, but I really did cut alot of junk like all the pot noodles and crisps I used to live off!

Moving on, As I am now vegetarian, and I get so many people asking about what kind of things they can eat, I'm going to do a few posts with pretty pictures and recipes of stuff I love all vegetarian! I want to branch out and try more of the main vegetarian brands (cauldron, Linda mccartney, Quorn) And give people my two cents. I've only been veggie for almost 2 years now, so I'm not acting like an expert in any way, just what I like to eat!

I also feel like it's a great opportunity for me to actually experiment myself, trying new food and branching out to the best vegetarian products I feel are out there. Many Vegetarian products are actually not that good for you however, which I'm actually still shocked about everytime I go into a supermarket. I personally focus on Saturated Fats, and just because it's vegetarian, it doesn't *necessarily* mean healthy!

I hope this has gotten some of you a little more excited as to whats going to be going on with my blog - I know I'm not the best blogger, but I really want this to represent me as a whole, not just 'Oh look at me wearing heels and a dress' haha, as there is alot more to me than just that!

One last point is that i have linked all photos to their source, But I actual found all of these on my FAVOURITE food inspiration blog (yes, I follow food inspiration blogs, not very fashion blogger of me haha!) called foodfuck. Oh my god, they have the nicest food pictures posted, but not only that, they actually take the time to source every photo to the original source which is usually a recipe! I hate seeing a picture of food and thinking 'Just how did they do that'? Anyway, I suggest you get inspired by following people like that as it really is super inspirational!

Let me know what you think, if theres anything you want to see in this series and any questions! The next post for Being Vegetarian is a little tutorial on 'easy nachos'. If you follow me on tumblr (@shewearsfashion!) you will have seen many snaps of these badboys!

  1. I used to be vegetarian, then I got with my boyfriend and felt rude saying no to meat - hahaha how bad does that sound. Although, all I eat is chicken.

Can't wait for more pictures and recepies :) This post has made me so hungry. xx

  3. Loved this post, look forward to the next one :) I've been vegetarian for nearly 15 years - one of the best choices I ever made. Linda mccartney & Quorn foods are good - L.M sausages are the best, not a fan of the Quorn ones but I love all their chicken stuff and mince! Sainsbury's do really nice soya mince too :)

  5. Lovely post, all that food is making me hungry! I'm not a vegetarian but as a student I rarely eat meat because good meat is expensive and I'd rather not eat meat at all than settle for cheap meat, that supposedly has 'less fat' in it but then instead is chockablock full of mashed up carbs instead. I agree that it's so important to have a good relationship with food, it's something to enjoy and not see as the enemy :)

  10. Love this post, Kavita! All of those food snaps look seriously good, I definitely need to revamp my eating habits, so I might begin to incorporate vegetarian meals three or four times a week to my routine, just to add some healthiness to my week! xx

  12. Very glad I read this after I ate or I would have wanted one if these recipes rather than my dinner, although after seeing the quinoa Im thinking about making some tomorrow.
I've been a vegetarian for nearly 17 years (or maybe longer) but I rarely ever eat fake meat- I was veggie before all the branded stuff took off and just don't really enjoy it- I don't even know if it's what meat tastes/feels like. But I wish I had your determination to keep slim- although I eat a balanced diet I know I eat too much (way too many nuts seeds and bananas!)
Please post up your meal ideas/ inspiration as I an always looking for new meals to try- and if you have any question I might be able to help.

  13. I respect your decision to become a vegetarian, but having grown up in Nigeria where poultry was a blessing to some families and farm animals enabled others to earn their keep, I do my fair bit of meat eating and justify it as my way of repaying the earth. Lol...I know right? LOL!! But i did note your weight loss and I'm pleased you addressed it and expressed your love for food. Brave decision as blog readers can be such hounds at times LOL

  16. I used to be veggie until my boyf turned me... I'd like to do it again but it's difficult to cook a meat meal and a veggie meal in the same sitting without it getting really wasteful. Asda meat free chicken pieces are soooo tasty! As is this little Vegan Society recipe: http://bit.ly/MqHM2j

    Keep posting foodporn :)

  18. I think I'm definitely going back to being veggie - I was one until I was 15 and my mum still is so it will be easy and I really agree with you that it's a super healthy way to eat as long as you pay attention to things like saturated fat. Also look out for Granose sausage mix (I think they do it in Asda and Morrisons) http://www.veggiestuff.com/acatalog/granose_meat_free_sausage_mix.html
I love it so much haha! xoxo

  20. I found this post really interesting and I am glad you wrote about it. I am a semi vegeterian. I eat chicken and seafood but I've never eaten any form of red meat. I find it much healthier. As a result, I often find myself eating a lot of vegeterian alternatives anyway and I think they taste great. Also I recently decided to eat less junk food. Even though I was thin anyway I thought it can't be good for anyone of any weight to eat lots off junk food. I cut down softdrinks and chips and mcdonalds from my diet and I think its made a difference so far. I admire your changes for a healthier lifestyle.

  24. Ah great post! I've been veggie for 12 years this summer and I'm always on the hunt for new recipes! I couldn't imagine ever eating meat again now. I find it strange when people always ask "what do you eat" like the only food out there is meat :S xxx

  25. I had no idea you were a vegetarian, but this is a great post as i love gaining insight into different types food diets. Meat does get boring sometimes but i love it nevertheless haha, i wouldn't be able to give it up ! It would be great if you could possibly talk about your favourite vegetarian meals :)

  27. I don't really like the idea of being a vegetarian. I mean, how do you get energy just by eating veggies? For me, life is never complete without meat, especially beef. Lmao.

  28. Quorn's chicken is the best!! I've been a vegetarian for around 4 years now and they definitely make the best chicken substitute.

Looking forward to future vegetarian posts!

  32. I'm a big meat eater - but have turned Pescatarian for Lent (meaning I can only eat fish - no meat).

I found it soo difficult at the beginning but there are so many amazing recipes you can make without meat (as your photos show!) - I'm quite enjoying it, as it's got me more creative in the kitchen!
